IHS Releases Updated Webpage Dedicated to Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ Issues

by Rick Haverkate, IHS National HIV & Hepatitis C Program Consultant, and Point of Contact for Two-Spirit & LGBTQ+ Matters

As we reflect back on Pride Month that was observed in June, I share with you that serving as the lead of Two-Spirit LGBTQI+ programs for the Indian Health Service is a deeply fulfilling role. This position allows me to be at the forefront of creating and implementing initiatives that address the unique needs of Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ individuals within Indigenous communities. It is a role that combines advocacy, cultural sensitivity, and health care—all aimed at uplifting and supporting some of the most resilient yet underserved populations.

One of the greatest honors of this position is the opportunity to weave traditional Indigenous values with modern health care practices. Two-Spirit individuals hold a revered place in many Indigenous cultures, recognized for their unique spiritual and social roles. Contemporary challenges however, including stigma and health care disparities, have often overshadowed this respect. As the program lead, I have the chance to restore and celebrate the Two-Spirit identity, ensuring that health care services are inclusive, affirming, and respectful of cultural heritage.

I am particularly thrilled to announce the release of our updated webpage dedicated to Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ issues. This revamped resource is designed to be a comprehensive hub for information, support, and advocacy. It offers educational materials, health care resources, and community support networks tailored specifically for Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ individuals. The updated webpage is a testament to our commitment to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity, providing a digital space where individuals can find the support they need, free from judgment and discrimination.

The new webpage, reinforced, reviewed, and edited by my esteemed IHS colleagues Jodee Brewer and Sara Cohen, also serves as a platform to amplify the voices of Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ individuals, sharing their stories and experiences to foster understanding and empathy. It is a tool for empowerment, enabling individuals to connect with their community, access vital resources, and confidently navigate their health care journey. Most importantly, many of the resources linked to this page are possible only through the dedication and energy of our partners from Paths (Re)Membered and financial support from the Minority HIV/AIDS Fund.

Last but not least, serving as the program lead for Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ programs for the IHS is a profound privilege. It allows me to blend advocacy with cultural celebration, addressing health care disparities while honoring the rich and proud heritage of Indigenous communities. The launch of our updated webpage marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to support and uplift Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ individuals. I am incredibly honored to be one small part of this essential work that so many dedicated people make possible.
