August is National Breastfeeding Month
During National Breastfeeding Month, and throughout the year, IHS supports policies and practices that foster breastfeeding as the exclusive feeding choice for infants in their first six months of life. Exclusive breastfeeding protects against obesity and type II diabetes, conditions to which American Indians and Alaska Natives are particularly prone. Ten IHS hospitals are designated as Baby-Friendly, indicating their commitment to improve breastfeeding rates through maternity care and infant feeding practices.
