BACKGROUND
This is to transmit a change to the Indian Health Manual, Part 3, Chapter 7, Pharmacy, Section 3-7.3D(2a)(vi) concerning prescribing of controlled substances has been updated. Several states now give physician assistants the authority to prescribe controlled substances. In order that Indian Health Service policy be consistent with allowable practice by the States, Schedule II-V Controlled Substances may be prescribed or dispensed by physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and clinical pharmacy specialists in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
