SGM No. 06-09
DEC 8, 2006
TO: All Employees

FROM: Director

SUBJECT: Rescinding Special General Memorandums No. 87-5 and No. 87-6

The purpose of this Special General Memorandum (SGM) is to rescind the following SGMs:

  1. SGM 87-5, "AIDS in Native Americans," dated April 7, 1987.
  2. SGM 87-6, "Indian Health Service AIDS Policy," dated July 17, 1987.

Both memorandums contain outdated guidance and language that conflicts with recently released Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines (updated September 22, 2006).  These errors create potential barriers to implementation of current CDC recommendations.

Although an SGM expires on the specific date that is cited in the body of the memorandum, a copy of the SGM is retained by the Area Delegations and Directives Control Officer(s) in accordance with the Indian Health Service Records Disposition Schedule.  Please discard your binder copies and any file copies of the SGMs at your earliest convenience.

If you have any questions regarding this memorandum, please contact Mr. Darryl Drapeaux, Director, Management Policy and Internal Control Staff, at (301) 443-2650.
