Overview

Vector-borne diseases refers to bacterial and viral diseases that are transmitted by a vector.  A vector would include mosquitos, ticks, fleas and other insects and animals.  Some of the more well known vector-borne diseases include:

  • Dengue Fever
  • Lyme Disease
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
  • West Nile Virus
  • Hanta Virus

Increasing global travel and trade as well as increasing urbanization and other factors are contributing to an increase in the number of vector-borne disease outbreaks.

In California, since 2007 the leading vector-borne diseases reported by Tribal health programs include Lyme Disease, Q fever and Pasteurellosis.
