Overview
Vector-borne diseases refers to bacterial and viral diseases that are transmitted by a vector. A vector would include mosquitos, ticks, fleas and other insects and animals. Some of the more well known vector-borne diseases include:
- Dengue Fever
- Lyme Disease
- Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
- West Nile Virus
- Hanta Virus
Increasing global travel and trade as well as increasing urbanization and other factors are contributing to an increase in the number of vector-borne disease outbreaks.
In California, since 2007 the leading vector-borne diseases reported by Tribal health programs include Lyme Disease, Q fever and Pasteurellosis.
