The objective of the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Branch (ASAB) is to reduce the incidence and prevalence of alcohol and substance abuse among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) to a level at or below the general U.S. population. The ASAB strives to meet this goal through the implementation of alcohol and substance abuse programs within Tribal communities including outpatient treatment and youth regional treatment centers in rural and urban settings.

The ASAB nurtures excellence in holistic approaches that promote healthy lifestyles, families, and communities. Programs address alcohol and substance abuse by improving access to behavioral health services through tele-behavioral health methods, and providing a comprehensive array of preventative, educational and treatment services. Currently, most mental health programs and nearly all alcohol programs are operated by tribal organizations.
