IHS Announces New Alaska Area Director
The Indian Health Service is announcing the appointment of Evangelyn “Angel” Dotomain as director of the IHS Alaska Area. As area director, she is responsible for providing leadership in the administration of a comprehensive federal and tribal Alaska Native and American Indian health care system. With a patient population of more than 174,990, the Alaska Area, in partnership with Alaska Native tribes and tribal organizations, provides comprehensive health services to 228 federally recognized tribes in Alaska.
She joined the IHS in 2012 and has served in a number of leadership roles in the Alaska Area. She has served as acting director of the Alaska Area since February 2019.
“I’m pleased to welcome Angel Dotomain to her new position as permanent IHS Alaska area director,” said Rear Adm. Michael D. Weahkee, IHS principal deputy director. “Over the past year, Angel has demonstrated the experience and leadership necessary to lead the Alaska Area.”
Dotomain is from Shaktoolik, a small Inupiaq village on the west coast of Alaska. She is Cup’ik and Inupiaq Eskimo. Dotomain is from the villages of Mekoryuk, Mary’s Igloo, and Shaktoolik. Dotomain previously served as the executive officer of the IHS Alaska Area, deputy director of the National Indian Health Board in Washington, DC, and president/CEO of the Alaska Native Health Board in Anchorage, Alaska.
Dotomain holds a Master’s in Business Administration in health services administration from Alaska Pacific University. She completed her undergraduate education at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business in Washington, DC, where she majored in international business.
