Maricruz Merino, MD, FACP, Chief of Internal Medicine, at Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, New Mexico was recently honored in the November 2019 American College of Physicians Top Hospitalists issue as one of “2019’s Top Hospitalists.”
Dr. Merino and nine other physicians from throughout the U.S. were chosen “by ACP Hospitalist's editorial board for their accomplishments in areas of hospitalist practice such as patient care, quality improvement, and medical education.”
As a hospitalist, Dr. Merino's job involves taking holistic and comprehensive care of hospitalized patients, ensuring that their physical, social, and spiritual needs are met. Dr. Merino serves as the primary care provider for these patients and is responsible for their diagnostic testing and medical treatment. As a hospitalist, she leads a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care ensuring that patients receive other services offered such as social work, dietary education, native medicine, substance use counseling, and specialty services. She is responsible for patients’ safe discharge home or to a nursing facility, and for ensuring the patient has an understanding of their illness, hospital course, and prevention of future problems.
Dr. Merino has worked in Gallup, NM since 2009. Dr. Merino is a graduate of Brown Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island. She did her residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
