Target Audience: Medical Providers, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Registered Dietitians, Health Education, and other members of the healthcare, public and community health team

Description: In this presentation, we will explore three principles to guide writing and design choices for materials created with a health literacy needs in mind. Materials designed to meet a range of health literacy needs are more likely to improve chronic disease management and increase the uptake of preventive services and behaviors. We will discuss high-impact design and writing strategies that improve readability, make materials easier to understand, and build health literacy.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Examine three principles that guide a health literacy approach to written materials.
  2. Apply design and writing strategies to create materials that improve chronic disease management and uptake of preventive services and behaviors.
  3. Employ writing strategies that improve readability at the word, sentence, and document levels.

To obtain a certificate of continuing education (CE), you must attend the activity in its entirety, submit a completed evaluation, and electronically document your attendance.
