The Institutional Environmental Health Program is a part of the Division of Environmental Health (DEHS). The primary focus of the Albuquerque Area Institutional Environmental Health program is on the healthcare facilities found within the Albuquerque Area of the Indian Health Service. Today's healthcare facilities face daunting challenges in maintaining a safe and healthful environment.
The health care facility’s Safety Officer, Infection Preventionist and Facility Management Staff are charged with providing an environment in which workers, patients, and visitors can perform their duties without compromising their health. Achieving this task requires knowledge and skills in the disciplines of occupational health and safety and infection control. Furthermore, there are countless numbers of regulations, policies, and programs that must be in place in order to retain accreditation.
The Area Institutional Environmental Health Officer provides the coordination and consultative services necessary to ensure that these requirements are met, and to ensure that the facility has in place effective occupational health and safety, emergency preparedness, and infection control programs. The Area Institutional Environmental Health Officer also conducts the x-ray equipment performance evaluations required by OSHA.
